Police: Drunk driver kills woman and 6-year-old girl in wrong-way crash

Drunk driving charges are serious by themselves, but in some circumstances, they can be paired with charges that are even worse. In a recent accident in Aurora, an allegedly intoxicated driver found himself in the wrong lane and killed two people before he was stopped and arrested.

The Incident

According to Aurora police, the suspected intoxicated driver was driving northbound in the 500 block of North Chambers Road when he crossed the median and struck a person on an electric bicycle. The bike rider was able to avoid the collision by jumping from his bike. The intoxicated driver continued to drive north and hit a Honda CRV that was traveling eastward on 6th Avenue. The wrong-way vehicle then struck two cars that were waiting for a light.

A passenger in the CRV was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other persons in the same car, including a 6-year-old child, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries. The girl later succumbed to her injuries. The man remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Driver

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was taken to a hospital for treatment and then released. After his release, the man was arrested by Aurora police and charged with vehicular homicide and driving while under the influence. According to the police affidavit, the driver of the wrong-way vehicle told police that he had consumed three 24-ounce cans of beer between 3:30 p.m. when he left work and 8:15 p.m., when the crash occurred.

The driver is facing serious criminal charges. Anyone who is facing similar charges may wish to consult an experienced drunk driving defense attorney for an evaluation of the evidence, preparation of potential defenses, and, when appropriate, assistance in negotiating an acceptable plea bargain.
